Rogelio is 8, his parents are never around and he gets his best birthday gifts from his dentist. This summer he is sent away to his nanny’s hometown, nestled in the Yucatan jungle. Rogelio spends the excruciatingly hot days obsessing over “The Book of Spirits” which awakens in him visions and dreams of ghosts, but above all, of an old man who leaves a trace of death when passing by. Rogelio recounts this to his new Mayan friends, Lucio and Juanito, who say this man is not a dream, he is real and lives in the outskirts of town, he is known as the “Xibalba Monster”. Why these dreams? Rogelio starts to spy on the monster and lives an adventure that will change forever his view on life and death.
Rogelio tiene 8 años, sus papás nunca están y la persona que le da los mejores regalos de cumpleaños es su dentista. Ese verano lo tiene que pasar en el pequeño pueblo de Eduarda, su niñera, en algún lugar de la selva de Yucatán. Rogelio pasa los calurosos días obsesionándose con “El libro de los espíritus” hasta que comienza a tener visiones y sueños donde hay fantasmas y sobre todo, un hombre viejo que va dejando un rastro de muerte al pasar. Rogelio le cuenta esto a sus amigos Lucio y Juanito, que le dicen que ese hombre no es un sueño, que es real y que vive a las afueras del pueblo. Lo llaman “el monstruo de Xibalbá”. Rogelio comienza a espiar al monstruo y a partir de ahí, vive una aventura que cambiará para siempre su visión sobre la vida y la muerte.

Mexican/Colombian filmmaker. She studied a BA in Filmmaking in Centro and then a MA Degree at London Film School. She held a FONCA grant in 2010. In 2013, she participated in Cine Qua Non Lab and the Project Development Workshop from Ibermedia. Her short film A Gesture was selected for FICM 2015 and Cinélatino 2016. Her short Sol del llano premiered at Clermont-Ferrand 2020 and it was selected at Regard, Huelva, Edinburgh and Tampere. In 2021, her feature project Xibalba Monster obtained funding from IMCINE and Visions Sud Est. In 2022, Xibalba Monster was selected for Ventana Sur in the Primer Corte section for WIPs, where it was awarded the Trieste Film Festival/ APCLAI Prize and the CAACI Prize. In 2023, she obtained financial support from IMCINE for the film’s post-production. Xibalba Monster premiered in August 2024 at the 77th Edinburgh International Film Festival as part of the Official Selection. In Mexico, it will have its first screening as part of the Official Selection of the 20th Monterrey International Film Festival in September 2024. Her next project, Love & Death in Tolantongo, has recently been selected for mentoring by the Australab Tres Puertos.
Cineasta mexicana y colombiana. Estudió la licenciatura de Cine en Centro y una maestría de guion en London Film School. Obtuvo la beca Jóvenes Creadores del FONCA en 2010. En 2013, participó en el taller Cine Qua Non Lab y en el curso de Desarrollo de Proyectos Ibermedia. Su corto Un gesto fue selección oficial del FICM 2015 y el 28° Festival Cinélatino Toulouse, 2016. En 2018, filmó su corto Sol del llano en Colombia, estrenado en el Festival de Cortometrajes Clermont-Ferrand 2020. Sol del llano ganó el premio a Mejor cortometraje mexicano en el Festival Black Canvas siguiendo su recorrido en Regard, Huelva, Edimburgo y Tampere. En 2021, Monstruo de Xibalbá obtuvo financiamiento de IMCINE y del Fondo Visions Sud Est. En 2022, fue seleccionada para el Fondo Gabriel Figueroa del Festival Internacional de Cine de Los Cabos y para la sección Primer Corte de Ventana Sur, en la cual ganó el Premio CAACI y el Premio APCLAI. En 2023, obtuvo financiamiento de IMCINE para su postproducción. Monstruo de Xibalbá se estrenó en agosto de 2024 en el 77 Festival Internacional de Cine de Edimburgo, como parte de la Selección Oficial. En México, estrenará en el 20 Festival Internacional de Cine de Monterrey en septiembre de 2024. Su siguiente proyecto, Amor y muerte en Tolantongo, ha sido seleccionado para las asesorías de acompañamiento de Australab-Tres Puertos.
