OVERVIEW

Guadalajara Film Festival (GLAFF), through the Work In Progress (WIP) LATINO program, has supported Latin American Filmmakers for over 9 years. In recent years, the focus has broadened to ensure the inclusion of BIPOC filmmakers based in the United States.

The University of Guadalajara Foundation USA and the festival’s industry sponsors make this important initiative possible. Their awards and support help complete the projects selected for WIP Latino.

The program has supported films that have achieved successful festival runs. The films supported by WIP Latino include The Dog Thief (Ladrón de perros), directed by Vinko Tomicic (WIP Latino 7), which premiered in the section International Narrative competition at the Tribeca Film Festival (2024). I’m No Longer Here (Ya No Estoy Aquí), directed by Fernando Frías de la Parra (WIP Latino 3), premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival (2020). The film represented Mexico in the category of Best International Film at the 2021 Oscars®. Fruits of Labor, directed by Emily Cohen Ibañez (WIP Latino 5), premiered at SXSW (2021), Official Selection in Documentary Spotlight. 499, directed by Rodrigo Reyes (WIP Latino 4), premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival (2020), and it went on to win Best Cinematography for director of photography Alejandro Mejia, as well as receiving the Special Jury Award at Hot Docs.

APPLICATION

GLAFF is now accepting applications for the post-production initiative WIP Latino 9. The program provides in-kind and cash support to Latin American and BIPOC filmmakers in the post-production stage; projects can be in the editing stage.

WIP LATINO 9 will take place during the 14th edition of the GuadaLAjara Film Festival (GLAFF) which will take place
November 1rd -November 3rd, 2024 in Downtown Los Angeles.

Films selected to participate in WIP Latino 9 will be eligible for in-kind services related to the film’s finishing, distribution, and marketing. One (1) film will be awarded a cash prize grant. The University of Guadalajara Foundation USA presents the grant. The complete list of awards will be published at a later date.

MANDATORY REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

GLAFF calls for entries from June 19th, 2024, through August 22nd, 2024.

Film must be submitted as follow:

  • Eligible films must be full-length fiction or documentary projects in the final editing stage or in early post-production.
  • Rough-cut must be at least 60 minutes long and not exceed 140 minutes.
  • Film must be subtitled in Spanish and/or English, depending on the original language. Film may be submitted without subtitles, however, if selected, the filmmaker commits to adding subtitles for the committee to review.
  • The link submitted must be private and password-protected. DOWNLOADABLE FILES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the material is available during the entire period of the selection process.
  • DVD/Blu-ray copies will not be accepted.
  • The applicant must be 18 years or older.
  • The applicant should have a key creative role in the film, preferably as a producer or director.
  • GLAFF employees or board members are not eligible for this open call.
  • The filmmaker cannot be a full-time student.
  • Films previously submitted for consideration are not eligible.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

The selected projects must confirm their assistance to the event one week after receiving the invitation; otherwise, their participation will be automatically canceled, and a runner-up will be selected.

The results of the selected films are final.

Wip latino 9 selected films will receive:

  • Festival passes for one representative of the selected film.
  • Hotel accommodations during the film festival in Los Angeles. The festival will confirm the number of nights later.
  • Project information will be published in the GLAFF’s 14th edition print catalog.
  • The application is free of charge.
  • Travel to Los Angeles and food expenses will be the responsibility of the Filmmakers.
  • Films awarded by WIP Latino 9 must include the GLAFF logo and the WIP Latino logo in the end credits once completed.

The organizing committee reserves the right to invite any feature film to participate.
